Carol Ann Duffy - First Official Poem as Laureate

How it makes of your face a stone

that aches to weep, of your heart a fist,

clenched or thumping, sweating blood, of your tongue

an iron latch with no door. How it makes of your right hand

a gauntlet, a glove-puppet of the left, of your laugh

a dry leaf blowing in the wind, of your desert island discs

hiss hiss hiss, makes of the words on your lips dice

that can throw no six. How it takes the breath

away, the piss, makes of your kiss a dropped pound coin,

makes of your promises latin, gibberish, feedback, static,

of your hair a wig, of your gait a plankwalk. How it says this –

politics – to your education education education; shouts this –

Politics! – to your health and wealth; how it roars, to your

conscience moral compass truth, POLITICS POLITICS POLITICS
Politics by Carol Ann Duffy

I like that Ms Duffy isn't just focusing on the Queens birthday's, but she's writing about those things that mark everyone.

  1. it's nice to see a poet tackling politics,
here's my political based poem, about the importance of the words politicians so easily churn out.

Mans Words Can Change Our World

I've heard the thoughts of many men,
    from all around the world.
Words of statesmen, about world peace,
    or Fathers 'bout their girls.
But the one thing they all share in bond,
    they all believe they're right.
Whether about nations, death and war,
    or their babies sleepless nights.
For the words of men on subjects dear,
    they cannot be mistaken.
Nor they be swayed from their true beliefs,
    or have their morals shaken.
So next time you hear one speaking,
about peace or clouds on high.
Before you dismiss all he says,
take a look into his eyes.
    For real courage and conviction,
is bourn from in our souls.
And if spoken true, from deep within,
Mans words can change our world.

  2. Thank you for posting your poem, it's nice, a little more optimistic than Ms Duffy's!

I think half the problem is either politicians have a warped sense of conviction or no conviction at all. Very few tread a middle ground, when they do, you're right they change the world.
